It is important to understand the distinction between Mind and Soul. The human being is a merging of Body, Mind and Soul. The Soul is that part of Spirit connected to the Higher Spirit/Soul that you are and that is a part of the Divine Light. The Mind is the ‘Intellectual part’ of your being. So the REAL YOU is not the body. “YOU” are a SOUL, the Spark of Light which took on embodiment, solely for the purpose of spiritual growth.
The soul is one, but when you take re-birth, you do not return with the ‘whole’ spirit. Your ‘Higher Soul’, is THAT ‘part’ of you, which holds all WISDOM, i.e. the knowledge that only through ‘living’ and ‘EXPERIENCE’ has been converted into Wisdom. Your ‘Higher Soul’ remains in the Spirit realm, and within the physical embodiment you ‘entrap’ only the ‘physical’ soul, i.e. that ‘part’ of you which still needs experience all knowledge so that through experience it can be converted into Wisdom.
In this ‘embodiment’, the Mind (in its two parts as Intellect and physical mind) plays a vital role, but its role must not be made the ‘sole’ one.
Now let us understand ‘the Mind’. Through your lifetimes, the Mind gets ‘conditioned’ by the environment in which you took physical embodiment.  It gets driven away from the ‘truth’ by parents, teachers, and society, which want it to think in the way THEY do. It soon learns to think, act and behave according to its conditioning.  So the Physical Mind is not only ‘contaminated’ by past conditioning, but  worldly attachments, fears, and anger also gets stored in this Physical Mind and it is this Mind which controls your reactions and feelings according to past and remote-past conditioning.
The purpose of re-birth is to FORGET, and then EXPERIENCE and remember. A ‘Veil of Forgetfulness’ is therefore placed on the physically embodied spirit at birth, due to which the Mind reverts back to its conditioning of past births; it becomes more of a ‘physical mind’ and as the child grows, this ‘veil’ on the intellectual becomes thicker and eventually, the physical mind enslaves YOU.
This enslavement is brought about by the formation of habit that is mind controlled. The greatest hurdle that the mind places in front of you is the habit of reacting. All feeling is habit controlled and all reactions arise from these feelings. The veil of forgetfulness leads you into a false belief that you are your mind and body, as another is also mind and body. This illusory belief is the cause of all conflict, all judgement, and all expectations.
The physically embodied spirit part of you will not exercise its right to grow, unless there is a mind-controlled decision to permit that to happen. (Your free-will choice resides within the intellectual part of you and not in the Spiritual)  So you as a ‘complete spiritual being’ must make a free-will choice with the help of the ‘intellectual part’ of you, to permit another part of you to grow.
As a Soul the greatest and only hurdle you face, is the control of your ‘physical’ mind.
