What is awareness? Is it only knowing the truths? Is it only coming to such meetings? Is it only reading of books, wisdom and knowledge? What is the use if you attend meetings such as this but the moment you step out, you again begin to live your lives in your subconscious manner? That is what you all do. All lives are lived either unconsciously but more often subconsciously. Let me explain this.
Unconscious. Without conscious, deliberate awareness. Unconscious is when you are completely unaware of the way you behave, the way you think, the words you speak. That is not the truth with those like you. The lives that you lead are subconscious lives, where your subconscious rules your every word, your thought, your action. It is the subconscious that you must traverse into. It is the subconscious that must be brought up to witness the light of day so that you know why you think the way you do, why you speak the way you do and why you act the way you do. The answers that you often get are glib and have no foundation in truth. They are the excuses you once again make and again using the subconscious mind but to traverse into your subconscious mind needs weeks and weeks, months and months of soul searching for who you really are, not being scared by what you see, not allowing the reins of conditioning to pull you back. That is the traverse of subconscious. It is a deep, dark sea.
Do not now lead your subconscious lives. These discourses are of no avail if as soon as you step out of this door, old habits come to the fore, whether they are habits of consumption, habits of behavior, habits of reaction, habits of word, habit of belief. The subconscious does not let go easily. The subconscious is made up of lifetimes of conditioning. But you must now be aware of what that conditioning is.
Awareness can be heightened though and this process, this voyage can be made simple, relatively speaking, if you lead conscious physical lives. What do I mean by this? Conscious of the food you take in. Which one of you in this room is unaware of the energy of food? Not one! You are all aware that dense food results in dense energy and fine foods result in fine energy and yet, how many times do you make excuses for yourselves not to eat fine foods? Your excuses are parties, festivals, joyous occasions. A joyous festive occasion is the opportunity you take to pull your energies down. What makes this occasion so joyous then? Where is the joy when you know that after this joyous celebration, your energy needs so much work done only to bring it up to where it was before the celebration? Can you not see the illusion of this celebration then? Every glass of alcohol that you have consumed, every drug that you have put in, every cigarette that you have smoked has taken away the effort that you made towards fineness.
Did you not mention yesterday that it’s a constant up and down and we remain where we are? How right you were but you don’t know why. Because the only movement that you make in your energy is only to maintain it at a level. You really stay where you are. And you are the puppeteer. You pull the puppet that is you and all your efforts are only to maintain an energy. How futile an effort! With conscious thinking, this effort would have made you into a being of fine energy. The same effort that you had put in, had it been accompanied by correct, conscious, deliberate, physical habits would have made your energy so fine that you would have been able by touch to experience that fine energy that is in your midst today. But you cannot do this. There is no one who can feel a physical touch. No one because your every physical habit has pushed the energy down. Then you meditate and you connect with your Masters and you work hard, and for that we give you full credit because you work so hard and then you bring it up to either the same level or slightly higher and then the very next moment there comes a celebration and you plummet downwards.
Why are physical habits so difficult for you to break? Because you lead subconscious lives. Conscious living means that you are conscious every moment of what you have put into your physical body. Don’t start at once. You can’t give up overnight but you must start. There will be some things the conscious awareness of which will make you leave it instantly because the subconscious pull is not too great. At least start with those. Every thing that you put in be conscious. If the subconscious pull is not great, start by leaving that.
Then your next habit of being sedentary, lazy. We are not talking of your mental activity. That is fine, sometimes greater than it should be. Physical activity. How often have you been urged to exercise and again how few of you do this consistently? Any excuse is then enough to stop you. "I’m on a holiday." "I have a lot of work" and the most commonly used excuse, "I’m tired". Of course, you are tired, little ones. The physical is being attacked at subconscious levels all the time. If you had to combat a worthy opponent for an hour at wrestling, would you not be fatigued? And you do it for 24 hours and you combat an opponent that is not worthy but far worthier than you, an opponent that you have built up with your own strength of all incarnations. Of course you are tired but it is in this moment of physical fatigue that conscious living comes in. Conscious awareness that my fatigue is due to the fact that my subconscious living has attacked me through the day. If your physical bodies are not subconsciously attacked, you will never get tired. The physical is not built for fatigue. The physical is not even built to require sleep. It requires rest, not sleep. But you have to sleep because it is in the hours of sleep that the subconscious attack stops. So you need that period of truce before you start the battle anew the next day. So exercise.
And then your 3rd level where you can consciously work at and that is the level of belief. Not thought. Thought is subconscious. You cannot help, at a conscious level at present density levels thinking the way you do because you do not know why you think, you only know that you think. But what can be attacked at a physical level is belief.
Moments of crisis are when your beliefs come in. When everything is going fine, this child will have all the correct beliefs. In moments of crisis, the subconscious rears up and those are the true beliefs. Oh, we hear. When you hear of tyranny and oppression and terrorism, your reaction is your true belief. How should this heinous murderer be dealt with? Hang him! Which one of you reacted with love, compassion, understanding and belief of the truth of the universe prevailing always, when that one whom you call Saddam had his face all over your newspapers? Which one of you did not believe that justice had finally prevailed? Whose justice? Where does your belief come when an eye for an eye is justice? That is the belief you must attack. Attack it at the conscious level. In moments of crisis when your subconscious rears and you are not in control and that opponent is winning that bout, have a friend who stands by you and reminds you, "Worthy wrestler, you are down. Stand up again before the counting stops". Each needs that friend. Each needs that referee who will urge you to stand up and continue the fight.
If you can start your battle at these three levels, food and drink and habit, exercise and belief, you will be well on your voyage to the subconscious because with these three, you will have consciously reduced your own density and then with fineness you will use the tool of respect to go through and row through the sea of subconscious. Once your belief has been attacked, respect is the sword that you will hold. Till then, this sword is not yours to claim.
Sir, may I ask a question, please? I really ask this on behalf of all of us with regard to denseness of food and habits like this. Why are they so appealing to our bodies?
That is your subconscious. THAT is your subconscious. That is your subconscious living. With conscious living there is no appeal. Conscious living is not as interesting as subconscious living. Subconscious living is interesting. It is an illusion of fun and pleasure that soothes you, caresses you, embraces you like the false stepmother with the rosy apple. That is your subconscious. Live in consciousness. Do not walk out of this room and live the next few weeks subconsciously and then make the excuse that I am human. I have so much work that I cannot remember all this. You need not remember any of this if you only remember to live consciously. Wake up out of the coma that you are in.
Beloved ones, be Light.
