The Gambler Within
Life hands you a set of cards, the combination of these cards makes you the being that you are. Think of it as your mental and emotional DNA.
You find that, for example, you were dealt the cards 1, 3, 4 & 6. Let’s assume that the following traits are attributed to the cards you hold:
1. Aggressive
3. Impulsive
4. Easily bored / distracted
6. Spendthrift
Wait a minute, that’s not good. You could go through life spinning out of control because there’s no caution in the way you live, no thought of a rainy day or dedication to a job. Something is missing. There has to be a balance in your being.
What do you do? You look for a person, who can fill the gaps in your sequence, the person who holds amongst their cards a 2 & 5. Assuming that 2 is Conservative and 5 is Steadfast. The person who attracts you is actually the person who completes you. Ever notice how you get so attracted to someone who is completely the opposite of you? It is your survival instinct, your quest for completion and balance. So what happens next? We find the person who completes our sequence of being and we live together ‘happily ever after’.
Or do we?
Sometimes, we forget to take into account that the other person also brings to the table their own set of cards. Along with the 2 & 5 there is also a 1 & 7. There is bound to be a clash with some of your traits. Can’t have two Ace of Spades in one deck of cards can we? The result - a clash of the titans! Constant duels and power play slowly removes the ‘happily ever after’ from your picture perfect life. What started as a game of fun becomes a tedious battle. You are left with two choices, round off the parts that don’t fit and edge your bets or leave the table.
Sometimes we stay because we remember how lucky we are to have found that person who completes our sequence of being.
Sometimes we leave thinking that the effort of dealing with the parts in conflict isn’t worth filling that gap in our sequence.
The gambler within, do we let him win?
