What is Religion to me?
I am a Pantheist.. I believe that all that exists is God; God is all that exists. This leads naturally to the concept of the divinity of the individual, that we are all Gods. I do not seek God in jade and ivory idols, nor as revealed in a sacred text or as exists in a remote heaven; He/She/It is within the self and throughout the entire universe.
The word "religion" holds no weight for me. Whether we look to the stars in wonder, or experience transcendence in complete isolation and solitude, religion is an attempt to define that experience, and to create ways to repeat it. That is, to create and repeat in a communal setting what is ultimately a subjective (and singular) experience.
How do I know that this is my definition of religion? I cannot say really. Although I can merely propose that "I am" and therefore "it is". Beyond that, I could say that I base my spirituality on the saying that "all Theology is autobiography". You make what you want of it. From it. It is subjective and hence, very hard to communicate to another being. This is why religions fail. You cannot expect others to freely and willingly follow your version of religion just because you think it is a better way than theirs.
It is what I do in my solitude. One doesn't have to perform rituals to be close to God. By reading a book, playing a game on my computer or cutting my nails, I can do just that. Though all that is required is a constant conscious acknowledgement of the fact that everything is "one" and God is everywhere.
As Karl Marx said, "Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, and the soul of soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people." |
