Letting Go

When you become good at the art of letting sufferings go, then you'll come to realize what you were dragging around with you. And for that, no one else other than you was responsible.” …..Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh

Within each of us exist areas of strength and weakness. When we are in strength we let go; when we dwell in our weakness we cling.

We refuse to let go of so much in our lives; failing relationships, lost hopes, crippling anger, brief moments of sunshine past, fading youth, broken dreams. We stubbornly hold on to these because we cannot accept that there are things in all our lives that just cannot be. We justify our holding on by calling it ‘not giving up’, but letting go does not spell defeat and ignoble surrender. Letting go is having the strength to wipe that tear, to look ahead and take one resolute step into the new.

It does not take strength to cling to your lost hopes and past relationships. These crutches enervate you and leave you depleted and empty. What have you ever clung to which has turned around and given you joy? Often our memories lead us to believe that letting go of that one person, or that ‘special’ something will bring about the end of the world as we know it. But, my dearest friend, the truth is, in fact, just the opposite. When you let go, you give yourself the joyous opportunity to say ‘hello’ to a new day, to the beginning of a new life.

Holding on to sorrow alienates you from life itself. Oprah Winfrey has said, ‘When you celebrate life in all its forms, life gives you more to celebrate.’ Choose to celebrate each dawn and toast the glory of each twilight.

Hanging on to anger, blame and resentment magnifies the person or event, giving it more meaning than it deserves. The energy of what you wish to forget remains within, crippling your creativity, enslaving you, keeping you a willing prisoner. Contemplate on the truth of this quote: “Hanging onto resentment is letting someone you despise live rent-free in your head.”

There is only thing we must never let go of, and that is our life’s purpose. Our purpose is fashioned by our soul and its power fuels our course, giving us the strength to stand even when our knees threaten to buckle under the weight of many burdens. And yet, the sad truth is that many let go of this in order to please others, or because they are too scared to acknowledge its magnificence. When this purpose cannot be seen, we hold on to anger and pain because their strength, however illusory, seems fuller than the emptiness of our soul.

Our hurdles lie within us and instead of overcoming them with fortitude, we hold on to them because we are just too scared to know any better. We cling to our faded youth because we do not know the dignity of age; we cling to a dying relationship because we fear that being alone means being lonely; we cling to past glory because today does not exist and tomorrow is too far away; we cling to broken dreams because we have not explored the vastness of our inner potential.

Letting go is often perceived as ‘risky’ but, my beautiful friend, the only risk you run is the loss of discontent, the separation from a broken heart, and the death of disappointment and disillusion.

Hold on to a beam of sunshine…..the night is over….Let Go.
